Highlights

Bangladesh

Bangalees are famous for their hospitality. Whenever people meet others, they always say “Bashai Ashben”- let me host at our home. Our pavilion’s displays, food and entertainment have been desgined to highlight this spirit of friendship. We therefore say- get to know us, you will make new friends.

Brazilian
Although well known for their soccer skills, this pavilion has many more surprises up their sleeves! Come check out the Afro-Brazilian Martial Art Dance, "CAPOEIRA GINGATIVA" and the "Havana Cuban Dance Studio" with their amazing Salsa and Latin dancing skills!

Caribbean
Known as the life of the party pavilion, we will be bringing back Prince Niah - the Fire Eater all the way from Jamaica; and Ayanna, the Limbo Dancer to keep this party fresh and alive! The Steel Band will make sure you have no excuse to not keep dancing the night away!

Chinese

Visitors to the Chinese Pavilion will be greeted by our 56 ethnic groups represented by sweeping images of China which will create a sense of being right next to picturesque landscapes and historical sites such as the Great Wall of China, Potala Palace, and the Terra Cotta Warriors. Not only can our visitors pose in front of the pictures, they can take part as they “try on” traditional costumes (without even changing). The interactive culture corner run by our enthusiastic high school students will give our visitors a taste of festivals and rituals embedded in the Chinese culture.

German

Germany has 16 Länder. We want to show some of them to our visitors, because Germany is not just Bavaria, as some people believe. The North the East and the West are also very beautiful. They all have their own traditions, amazing landscapes, different food and costumes. They also have, besides High German, different dialects. This should be, hopefully, an educational aspect of Germany.

Greek
The food is delicious and their recipes kept secret but during Folkfest you will get to experience the wonderful tastes and aromas of this pavilions food that they claim make even their Gods jealous!

Hispanic
The breaking of the Piñata, not only animates the kids but the adults as well at it marks the beginning of the fun filled night with musical guests X-BAND! With FIESTA TIME on Saturdays, you will learn how to party and have fun like a true Hispanic!

Hungarian
Having retired for a few years, they are back and in full Folkfest Mode! This year they will make sure their famous Gulyas and the Dobos torta mesmerize your taste buds as you are entertained by Csárdás and other dances, making sure you never want to leave!

India
Indian style cuisine, they will make sure you as soon as you leave you will want to buy a plane ticket and experience this wonderful culture first hand!

Indian/Mètis
This culture has been around for centuries and they are back to teach us more about one of the first Canadian cultures. With their old wisdom, they will teach you how to dance their Red River Jig, the Hoop dance and have you participate in the Roundance every hour!

Irish
Although known for the treasure at the end of the rainbow, this year the Irish will have more treasures that you can imagine! Join them in their toe-tapping dances while eating their Irish whiskey cake that will have you jumping up and joining the fun!

Jewish

Get your name written in Hebrew or buy your very own dreidel.  Enjoy the rambunctious Klezmer band, and we may even have a comedian on hand.

Norway

Trolls are part of the Norwegian culture and this year they are coming to Folkfest! Trolls are fascinating, there are good and bad legends about Trolls and with all this newfound popularity in entertainment today with vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night, trolls will be and added bonus. We will also highlight the Norwegian fairy tale of  the Three Billy Goats Gruff as part of our dialogue on Trolls.

Philippines

As more and more immigrants from the Philippines arrive in Saskatoon, more and more people are noticing the differences and the similarities that define them. Separated by geography and by the far-flung islands, they come from different regions and areas, speak different dialects, have different customs, even different food specialties.  Many faces, many cultures,  one word unites them all — Filipinos.

Scottish
As soon as you enter this pavilion, those who are from Scotland will make sure the movement of the Glenlily Highland dancers and the sounds of Pipes and Drums, will keep you firmly rooted to your seat. And just in case you begin to wiggle and move towards the door, they have brought new groups such as Prairie Thunder and a step-dancing group from the East Coast, to shake that idea from your head!

Karpaty Ukrainian
The Ukrainian culture has been one of the first cultures to be well established here in Saskatchewan, and they keep coming back every year to show us why! With their traditional Babas recipes and their amazing dancing skills, they will make you ask for more every year!
